"When you play a team like Southern Miss it's tough to force the tempo. We
wanted to run, but we were playing a team that plays slow. James (Green)
has done an excellent job with his team. They are a senior dominant team.
We knew we would have to pay well to win. We didn't shoot it well and
obviously they had something to do with that. We got out-rebounded, we go
8-18 from the line, our shooters don't make shots. To beat a good team we
had to play better and we just didn't get it done. I thought we had some
effort in the second half. We cut the game to eight. I thought the fight
was there, we just got too far down and couldn't come back. Elvin Miims
really stepped up and hurt us. I thought Tom Frericks played some good
minutes in the first half. I thought Sindey Ball played with some great
energy in the second half."
Southern Mississippi Head Coach James Green
Comments on the game:
"We rebounded hard. I thought that we established right out of the gate
our game, we are very physical. We had to step up and make playas on both
ends of the court. Certainly, defensive rebounding gives you a chance to
win the game. We have to do a better job of shooting free throws down the
stretch. For the most part we did as a team what it takes to win.
Defensively we handled them pretty good. I thought we had great focus."
The difference the games against UAB last year and this year:
"Tonight had nothing to do with last years games. As for our other years,
we told the guys that in years past and last year we came over here after a
tough Tulane game were we lost on the last shot of the game. During that
game our spirit was not as good. We were going through some tough times.
We just have more guys that can do more things. I think our focus and
leadership has been so good."
About Southern Mississippi's road trip:
"We won our one home game and we have been two and two on the road. I am
sure any team in our conference would love to be two and two on the road.
I think we are going to have a good conference season."
