(Records: UC 3-2, 3-0 C-USA, UAB 2-4, 1-2 C-USA)
UAB gave up its first touchdowns of the 2001 season on its home field and
its first TDs to a C-USA opponent. Prior to Cincinnati?s touchdown early in
the second quarter (an 8-yard pass from Gino Guidugli to Jon Olinger), the
Blazers had gone nine (9) quarters without allowing a touchdown at home, and
nine without allowing a touchdown to a C-USA team (Army and Southern Miss
both successfully kicked field goals).
UAB has now allowed 37 points in three C-USA games this season (12.3
points per game).
UAB held Cincinnati to 66 net rushing yards in the game, only one Blazer
opponent has recorded 100 or more net rushing yards vs. the UAB defense this
season -- Florida State (135). The last C-USA team to rush for 100+ net
yards vs. UAB was...Cincinnati (44-126) in a 33-21 Bearcat win at Nippert
Stadium last season (Nov. 4, 2000).
UAB has also not allowed an opposing player to rush for 100+ net yards in
19 straight games, dating back to Oct. 30, 1999, when Louisville?s Frank
Moreau ran for 128 yards and a touchdown in a 23-14 Cardinal win
in Louisville.
Redshirt freshman placekicker Nick Hayes connected on his first two PATs
as a collegiate player, as well as his first successful field goal, a
44-yarder in the first quarter.
True freshman Roddy White made his first career touchdown catch as a
Blazer, a 24-yard reception from QB Jeff Aaron , which cut the UC lead to
21-17 with 8:30 remaining in the third quarter.
Senior linebacker John Humphries returned to action for the first time
since the Florida State game (Sept. 8), Humphries suffered a broken arm in
the second half of the FSU game.
Aaron passed for 120 yards and a touchdown (9-23 with one interception),
he left the game in the third quarter with a sprained ankle and will be
evaluated on Sunday.
While in the game, Aaron equaled his career rushing yards high -- 66 yards
-- set previously vs. Army (Sept. 22, 2001).
Senior cornerback Patrick Burchfield intercepted his second pass of the
2001 season on Cincinnati?s first possession of the game, Burchfield had a
second pick nullified later in the game by a roughing the passer penalty.
Senior safety Adrian Singleton left the game in the first half with a
bruised shoulder, he will be evaluated again on Sunday.
Cincinnati?s block of a Ross Stewart punt and return for a touchdown
(Antwan Peek) was the first by a UAB opponent since Virginia Tech did it in
1998 -- also at Legion Field.
UAB completes a two-game C-USA home stand next Saturday, hosting Tulane at
Legion Field (4:00 pm CDT) in the Blazers? 2001 Homecoming game.
