Volleyball Tops Charlotte 3-1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UAB (7-11, 1-8 Conference USA) defeated Charlotte (7-11, 1-8 C-USA) 30-27, 15-30, 30-28, 30-22 in Conference USA volleyball action at Halton Arena.
Junior right side hitter Kristi Lee led UAB with 18 kills, 11 digs and three total blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Martina Shields had 15 kills, sophomore middle blocker Karen Boyd posted 14 kills, hit for .333 and had 15 digs, and freshman setter Jessica Liptak added 51 assists and 14 digs.
"It was a total team effort tonight," said Head Coach Melinda Claiborne. "It was a solid performance all the way around, offensively and defensively. Martina (Shields) was solid offensively and defensively in both games this weekend."
Junior outside hitter Courtney Burg led Charlotte with 17 kills, sophomore outside hitter Chanda Waller had 16 kills, senior right side hitter Esra Akgun posted 12 kills and 14 digs and freshman setter Molly McDonald had 38 assists.
UAB next travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to face in-state rival Alabama (11-5, 4-3 Southeastern Conference) Tuesday at 7 p.m.
