Blazers Drop Road Match at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. β The UAB volleyball team fell to Auburn, 3-1, Thursday night at Neville Arena.
The Blazers jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the opening set following kills from Makayla Meister and Mia Reese. Reese and Sydney Austin then teamed up for a block to extend UAB's early advantage. The Blazers continued to build their lead, going up by as many as eight before taking the opening set, 25-19.
Auburn responded in the second set, using a 5-0 run to take a 9-4 lead. Another extended run midway through the frame pushed the Tigers' advantage into double digits at 19-9 before Auburn closed out the set, 25-16, to even the match.
Back-to-back Auburn attack errors gave UAB an early 2-0 lead in the third set, but the Tigers answered with six straight points to take the lead. UAB battled back to pull within three at 14-11 following a Tiger service error, but Auburn responded with a 6-1 run before taking the set, 25-18, and moving ahead 2-1 in the match.
Auburn opened the fourth set with a 6-2 run before UAB battled back to even the frame at 13-13 following a Kennedy Vaughn kill. The Tigers regained the lead, but Addyson Smock's kill brought the Blazers within one at 20-19. Auburn, however, closed the match by scoring the final five points to take the set, 25-19.
Vaughn led UAB with 11 kills, while Rachel McCollum added eight kills, 12 assists and five blocks. Delaney Bowser paced the Blazers with 11 digs.
The Blazers return to action Friday at 3 p.m. against South Alabama at Neville Arena.
