BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Guard P.J.
Arnold had a
"double-double" with 21 points and 11 rebounds and forward Eric
Batchelor scored 17
as UAB defeated EA Sports in a college basketball exhibition game Tuesday evening at
Bartow Arena.
UAB led the
entire first half, and held as much as a 23-point advantage paced by Batchelor
and guard Eric Bush with 10 points each. The Blazers led 49-27 at the break.
The Blazers
would lead by as many as 25 points in the second half.? EA Sports closed to within 13 points,
first 9:46 to play and again with 8:30 remaining.
EA Sports,
which defeated North Carolina 107-76 Sunday and lost to Duke 129-96 Monday, was
led by former Gonzaga guard Richie Framm with 16 points, former St. Bonaventure guard Tim
Winn with 15, and
former Alabama guard Schea Cotton with 14 points.
"I thought there was a
lot of good things in tonight's game," said UAB Head Coach Murry
Bartow after the game.
? "I thought we played a lot like the other exhibition
game (UAB defeated the Global Sports All-Stars 76-61 Nov. 2).? I thought we played well in the first
half but we had some slippage in the second half.? This team we played tonight has played a lot of people
tough.? Staples not playing tonight
definitely made a difference (former Virginia player Curtis Staples led EA
Sports with 31 points in Sunday's win at North Carolina).? Conditioning was a factor, we are not
in the shape that we need to be in for this season.? It is easy in an exhibition game to lose focus."
UAB
out-rebounded EA Sports 54-35, led by Arnold's 11 and Myron Ransom, Will
Campbell and Cedric Davis with eight each.
"We
have always been a pretty good rebounding team.? We rebounded really well tonight.? This pre-season we really worked on it.? P.J. Arnold getting eleven rebounds was
really encouraging to me.? We
really need him to rebound more.? Myron
Ransom and Will Campbell are both really good defensive rebounders.? We are really impressed with the
progress of Cedric Davis."
The Blazers
open the 2001-02 season for real on Saturday, Nov. 17 vs. Eastern Michigan in
the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.
