UAB Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From Charlotte

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB (24-31, 8-9 Conference USA) swept a doubleheader from Charlotte (15-28, 1-16 C-USA) in Conference USA softball action at George Ward Park Field No. 6, winning the first game 4-0 and taking the second contest 5-3.
In game one, UAB got on top in the bottom of the first inning when left fielder Jessica Brown tripled to left center, scoring third baseman Candice Hithe.
The Blazers added a run in the bottom of the second on a solo home run to right center by pitcher Kerri Foster.
UAB's final two runs came in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer to left field by center fielder Cliffanie Engram.
Foster (12-13) had a complete game shutout for UAB, working seven innings, allowing four hits, one walk and striking out five.
Amy Morse (7-10) went the distance for Charlotte and got the loss. Morse pitched six innings, allowed four runs on six hits and struck out two.
Charlotte struck first in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning.? Second baseman Susan Coyle singled through the left side, driving in third baseman Leah Heston. Coyle was then able to score on a wild pitch by Kelli Thompson to put Charlotte up 2-0.
UAB answered in the bottom of the inning, putting five runs on the board. Right fielder Emily Scarbrough singled in designated player Lucy Bass for the first run of the inning. Left fielder Jessica Brown singled in catcher Carrie Parker to tie the game at two. UAB took the lead on Thompson's hit that drove in Hithe, Brown and Engram.
Thompson (10-15) tossed a complete game for UAB, working seven innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out five.
Betsy Thompson (5-12) also had a complete game for Charlotte and picked up the loss. Thompson pitched six innings, allowed five runs on nine hits, walked none and struck out three.
The teams will meet in the final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday has been designated Senior Day as it will be the final home game of the year for UAB.
