UAB Softball Completes Three-Game Sweep Of Charlotte

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB (25-31, 9-9 Conference USA) completed a three-game sweep of Charlotte (15-19, 1-17 C-USA), defeating the 49ers 7-1 in Conference USA softball action at George Ward Park.
The Blazers got four runs in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of two-run home runs. Right fielder Lucy Bass hit the first to left field, bringing in left fielder Jessica Brown. Designated player Kelli Thompson put the second over the fence in left center, bringing in shortstop Beth Mullins.
UAB added two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Right fielder Cliffanie Engram reached on a throwing error by catcher Jennifer Herzig, which allowed Brown and third baseman Candice Hithe to score.
UAB's final run came in the bottom of the third inning when second baseman Adrienne Guilbeau singled through the right side, scoring first baseman Jessica Smith.
Charlotte's run came in the top of the fourth inning. With runners on first and third, designated player Elizabeth Burris reached on a fielder's choice, allowing left fielder Kristy Constantino to score.
Mandie Wyatt (3-1) had a complete game victory for UAB, working seven innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking one and striking out one.
Dana Bowers (3-7) started the game, pitched two-thirds of an inning and picked up the loss for Charlotte. Bowers gave up four runs on four hits and walked none. Amy Morse came on in relief of Bowers in the top of the first inning and worked three and one-third innings. Morse allowed three runs on five hits and walked one. Betsy Thompson pitched the final two innings for Charlotte and allowed one hit and struck out one.
The Blazers won both games of the doubleheader with Charlotte Saturday, winning game one 4-0 and taking the second contest 5-3.
UAB next travels to Houston for a three-game series with the Cougars Saturday-Sunday. Saturday, the teams meet in a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m., and Sunday will feature a single game, also at 1 p.m.
