POST-GAME NOTES: UAB vs. ARMY (Sept. 22, 2001 EUR Legion Field EUR Birmingham, Ala.)
FINAL SCORE: UAB 55 ARMY 3 (Records: UAB 2-1, 1-0 C-USA, Army 0-2, 0-2 C-USA)
BIG NUMBERS: The 55+ points by UAB is the most scored by the Blazers vs. an NCAA Division I-A opponent, and the most ever vs. a C-USA opponent. The UAB all-time record is 61 points vs. Knoxville College in a I-AA game at Legion Field in 1995, the previous scoring high in the I-A era for the Blazers was 48 vs. Tennesssee-Martin (at the Hoover Met, 1998).
THE SERIES: UAB now leads the series with Army 2-0, dating back to the 2000 season.
IT'S GOOD TO BE HOME: UAB is now 2-0 at Legion Field this season. The Blazer defense has not allowed a touchdown in eight quarters at home this season. The only touchdown scored by a UAB opponent at Legion Field was an interception return by Montana State's Kane Iaone (Aug. 30).
FIRST DRIVE SUCCESS: UAB quarterback Jeff Aaron's 15-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Simmons on UAB's first offensive possession was the first touchdown for UAB on its opening drive this season. The last time a Blazer team scored a touchdown on its opening possession? At Army last season (a one-yard run by Cory Conley, Nov. 18, 2000).
AARON TO GALLERY: Jeff Aaron's touchdown pass to Maurice Gallery in the first quarter was a first for both players, it marked the first time Aaron has thrown two or more TD passes in a single game (his first six career TD passes all came in separate games), and it was Gallery's first scoring reception in 28 games as a Blazer (1998- ).
BLOCKED!: UAB special teams got into the action in the second quarter, junior defensive end Deijon Hart blocked a punt by Army's Dan McElroy, setting up a UAB touchdown ? a 10-yard run by quarterback Jeff Aaron on the next play. In the game at Army last season (Nov. 18), UAB blocked two Cadet punts.
AARON'S BIG DAY: Before giving way to backup Thomas Cox in the third quarter, UAB quarterback Aaron passed for 187 yards, rushed for 66 yards and was responsible for three touchdowns (2 passing, one rushing).
DUGGER WATCH: Senior running back Jegil Dugger rushed for 89 yards on 17 carries, scoring on runs of three and 28 yards. Dugger now has 263 yards this season on 58 carries (4.53 average) and 1,403 career rushing yards on 293 carries (4.8 average). Dugger scored two TDs vs. Army, giving him at least one in each of the Blazers' games this season and 11 for his career (ranking him second in the UAB Division I-A era and third all-time in Blazer football history).
MULTIPLE INTERCEPTIONS: UAB's (four) interceptions in the game equals the school's I-A era record, set vs. LSU last season (Sept. 23, 2000) when the Blazers picked off four Tiger passes en route to a 13-10 victory in Baton Rouge. The all-time UAB mark for interceptions in a single game is five (5), set vs. Morehead State in a I-AA game at Legion Field in 1999.
IT'S A FACT: UAB has intercepted at least one pass in 20 of its last 25 games (and in two of three games this season).
BIG PLAY MAN: Senior safety Andrew Kopecky's 36-yard fumble recovery and return was his second career touchdown. Kopecky blocked a Louisiana-Lafayette punt and returned it for a TD last season (Sept. 30, 2000).
CARRYING THE COLORS: UAB was led onto the field by junior safety Sentell Winston, who carried an American flag.
GALLEGO KEEPS ON KEEPIN' ON: Senior placekicker Rhett Gallego hit both of his two field goal attempts and five PATs on the afternoon, for 11 points in the game. Gallego is now 30-37 (.811) for his career on field goal attempts and 50-52 on PATs with 24 consecutive made (dating back to the the 2000 season).
