BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB Blazers (7-3-3, 3-1-2 C-USA) scored three goals in the final 12:51, capped off by a Flavio Monteiro goal with only 1:01 remaining in the contest, to pull out a dramatic 3-2 victory over the DePaul Blue Demons here Saturday night.
The Blazers are playing their best soccer of the season, having gone 6-1-2 over their last nine contests, with the lone loss coming to nationally-ranked Saint Louis. Over its last six contests, the UAB offense has been in high gear, outscoring its opponents by a count of 14-4, en route to a 4-0-2 record. The win also kept the Blazers unbeaten for the month of October - all conference victories.
"That was a pretty intense contest," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "I though DePaul worked very hard and both of their penalty kicks were legit calls. Our guys never gave up and just kept going. I'm proud of the way we fought and very pleased with the overall effort."
DePaul (5-6-2, 2-3 C-USA) struck first at the 23:14 mark of the first half when UAB goalkeeper Clint Baumstark was whistled for a foul in the penalty box. DePaul's Luke Rojo then converted the kick into the lower right corner of the net for the early 1-0 lead. The Blue Demons received their second penalty kick of the contest in the 50th minute after a UAB defender took down a player in the box. DePaul's Edwin Arreola converted the kick to give DePaul a two-goal lead.
The score remained that way until the 77:04 mark when it was UAB's turn for a penalty kick. Monteiro put UAB on the board with the conversion to cut the DePaul lead to 2-1. Just seven minutes later, at the 84:16 mark, senior Jermie Frankson hit a rocket from 25-yards out, into the left side netting to even the score at 2-2.
Finally, at the 1:01 mark, Monteiro put the cap on the dramatic comeback when he took a pass from Frankson and buried a shot into the lower right corner for the Blazer victory. It was Monteiro's team-leading sixth goal of the season and first game-winner.
The Blazers will attempt to keep the streak going when it travels to Memphis, Tenn. to take on the Tigers of Memphis on Wednesday, October 23, at 7 p.m.
