MEMPHIS, Tenn. ----- For the second consecutive contest, the UAB men's soccer team (8-3-3, 4-1-2 C-USA) scored in the waning minutes to pull out a victory. On Wednesday night, against Conference-USA rival Memphis (8-5-1, 2-5-1 C-USA), senior Flavio Monteiro scored with 3:24 remaining in regulation to lift the Blazers to a 2-1 victory. Monteiro also scored the game-winning goal in the Blazers' last game against DePaul on October 19 with 1:01 remaining.
"This was another close, physical contest," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "I thought our guys played a good game against a very solid Memphis team. We did a good job of maintaining our composure towards the end and we were able to pull it out."
The Blazers struck first in the 20th minute as senior Jermie Frankson received a pass from Marin Pusek in middle of the field. He then turned, took two dribbles and fired a shot from 20-yards out into the lower left corner to give UAB the early 1-0 lead.
The goal marked Frankson's fourth over the last three contests, while Pusek tallied his team-leading seventh assist of the campaign.
Memphis battled back and was able to tie the game at 1-1 when Omar Jarun headed a ball off the bottom of the crossbar into the back of the net at the 83:35 mark. However, just over three minutes later at the 86:46 mark, Monteiro took a free kick from Mikey Spitzer at the backside of the net, and drilled home a left-footed shot from 12-yards away to give the Blazers the 2-1 victory.
Sophomore Clint Baumstark, who was just recently named to the U-20 U.S. Men's National Team pool of players, made four saves in the victory.
UAB is playing its best soccer of the season, having gone undefeated over its last seven contests (5-0-2) and is 7-1-2 over its last 10 games, with the lone loss coming at nationally-ranked Saint Louis.
The Blazers will next play at Marquette University on Sunday, October 27, at 1 p.m.
