BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Five Blazers scored in double figures to help lift UAB to a 94-66 victory over the University of Montevallo in men's basketball action Thursday night at Bartow Arena.
Morris Finley and Cedric Davis each had 17 points to lead all scorers. Davis shot 66 percent (8-12) and Finley shot 47 percent (7-15) from the field for the Blazers. Demario Eddins posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Jeffrey Collins added 14 points and Gabe Kennedy had 12 points for UAB.
"It was a very good exhibition for us," said UAB head coach Mike Anderson. "We still have some things to work on. We are still a work in progress. We have to execute a little better on the offensive end and make more adjustments on the defensive side. It was a good win, but I felt like we were not as focused as we should have been."
Four players scored in double figures for Montevallo, led by Kenneth Cooper who had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Bert Mosley also posted a double-double for the Falcons with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Montevallo held a brief lead in the first half, but with the Falcons leading 16-15 and 9:53 left in the half, Kennedy gave the Blazers a 17-16 advantage. UAB would not relinquish the lead from that point on.
UAB led 35-26 at the break.
UAB shot 53.3 percent from the field in the second half, while holding the Falcons to 42.9 percent shooting from the floor. The closest Montevallo would come in the second half was a nine-point deficit at the 16:29 mark.
The Blazers out-rebounded the Falcons 52-38. UAB scored a total of 47 points off 38 Montevallo turnovers. The Blazers were equally impressive in the paint, outscoring the Falcons 52-24.
The UAB bench added to the Blazers' strength, as they scored 51 points to Montevallo's 15.
UAB will host Birmingham-Southern in its first regular season game Thursday at 7 p.m. at Bartow Arena.
