BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The University of Alabama at Birmingham signed a set of twin junior college basketball players to national letters of intent on the first day of the early signing period. The twins, Donell and Ronell Taylor from Montgomery, Ala., currently play for Okaloosa-Walton (Fla.) Junior College which is 5-0 and currently ranked 2nd in the NJCAA.
Donell, an all-conference selection last year, is a 6-6, 180-pound guard who is averaging 23.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.2 steals in four games this season. As a freshman, he averaged 12 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.4 assists and two steals. Donell was named 2nd team pre-season All-American.
Ronell, a FCCAA All-Tournament selection in 2002, is a 6-5, 180-pound guard who is currently averaging 22.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and three steals in five games this season. He also had a tremendous year in 2001-02, averaging 13 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists.
"We got a dynamic duo in terms of basketball players," first-year head coach Mike Anderson said. "I think they are a great fit for what we are trying to do at UAB. I like their versatility and think they will make an immediate impact.
"Both of these guys are defensive-minded, very athletic and instinctive basketball players. They will be a welcome addition to the Blazer basketball program. I think this is the beginning of a very good recruiting class."
Both players competed at Sidney-Lanier High School in Montgomery, Ala. where they were named all-state and led the team to the Alabama High School state championship in 2000.
