BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Will Campbell scored 18 points and blocked three shots as UAB held off a late surge by Southern Mississippi and won 66-56 Tuesday.
Eric Bush complemented Campbell's performance with his first career double-double for UAB (13-15, 6-9 Conference USA) with 12 points and 12 assists. He also had six rebounds, five steals and no turnovers.
Southern Mississippi (9-17, 3-12) was led by Brad Richardson with 11 points.
Elvin Mims, the Golden Eagles leading scorer with an 18.7 average, was held to seven points.
In the first meeting between the two teams this season, Southern Mississippi won 50-36, holding UAB to the lowest point total in school history.
But the Blazers jumped on top early this time, taking a 38-20 halftime lead.
Southern Mississippi tightened the game in the second half and got within nine points five times. But the Golden Eagles could get no closer.
UAB started to pull away near the end of the first half as Campbell took control inside. He scored three baskets and sparked a 14-4 UAB run at the close of the first half.
The Blazers outrebounded Southern Miss 19-9.
