Women's Golf Finishes 12th at Waterlefe Invitational

BRADENTON, Fla. - UAB's Christina Gushanas fired a final round 78 for her third career top-20 finish as the women's golf team finished 12th at the Waterlefe Invitational Tuesday.
The Blazers saved their best round of the tournament for the final day shooting 314 at the par-72, 5909-yard Waterlefe Golf Club. Monday, the Blazers posted rounds of 323-328 to finish the event wit a 965 total.
Michigan State captured medalist honors by 16 strokes over second place finisher Tulane. The Spartans fired rounds of 293-301-308 for a 902 total. The Green Wave finished with 918 after carding the lowest round of the day Tuesday with 299. South Florida (934), Central Florida (935) and Louisville (936) rounded out the top-five teams.
Gushanas, a junior from Pearland, Texas, finished tied for 19th, posting rounds of 78-77-78 for 233. Last season, she posted two top-20 finishes, a ninth place spot at the Edwin Watts/Carolinas Classic and a tie for 16th at the Lady Blazer Invitational.
Michigan State's Emily Bastel finished with the tournament with a 2-under par 214 to claim top individual honors. Bastel was the only player to finish with a score under par. UCF's Federica Piovano finished at even par with 216 to take second and Sharon O'Neill of Campbell rounded out the top-three with 220.
Senior Heather Lourie continued her steady play this season carding rounds of 76-83-78, good enough for a tie for 25th place. The Blazers also got a final round 78 from freshman Brooke Mangan. The Victoria, Australia native shot an 81-83 on day one to finish with 242 and a share of 39th place.
Rounding out the Blazer squad was sophomore Katie Kane (90-85-80/255), finishing tied for 59th and senior Petra Hallberg (88-88-84/260), in a tie for 64th.
The Blazers are back in action next week as they host the 2002 Lady Blazer Invitational. The 15-team field will play at the Inverness Country Club beginning Monday and concluding on Tuesday.
