BIRMINGHAM - Despite the rain delays and bad weather, UAB fought its way to a second place finish Tuesday afternoon firing rounds of 306-308 for a 614 total at the Lady Blazer Invitational held at the par-72, 5979-yard Inverness Country Club.

The Blazers finished just two shots behind Northern Iowa who posted a final-round 305 for a 612 total. Arkansas State captured sole possession of third with 624, while Jacksonville State was one shot back of the Indians at 625. Troy State rounded out the top-five with 639 followed by South Alabama (641), Cincinnati (642), Austin Peay (647), Tennessee Tech (655), Samford (656), Birmingham-Southern (661), Evansville (671), Lipscomb (685), and Montevallo (736).

Birmingham Southern's Laura McCaslin captured medallist honors with a final 146. McCaslin finished the tournament with an even-par 72 after carding a 74 on Monday.

UAB's Heather Lourie finished in second place, just three shots out of first. The senior from Montreal, Canada posted a first-round 75 and followed it up one stroke better at 74 in Tuesday's final round.

Northern Iowa's Julie Hary took third with 150, while South Alabama's Maria Brostedt finished in fourth with 152.

Blazer junior Jenni Elmore finished Tuesday with a 76 after firing a first round 78. The 154 total placed her in a tie for seventh. Freshman Brook Mangan tied for 10th with a 155. The Mornington, Australia product carded rounds of 77-78 to finish third in line for the Blazers.

Freshman Marika Pluta posted a 76-80 for 156 and a share of 13th place, while junior Christina Gushanas rounded out the Blazer squad with 85-82 for 167 and a tie for 46th.

UAB will take a couple weeks off before playing in the LSU/Cleveland Classic in Baton Rouge, La. on April 5-7.
