NEW ORLEANS, La. - It must have seemed like a normal spring day for UAB senior women's golfer Heather Lourie . For most of the 82 players at the Green Wave Women's Golf Classic, though, it was anything but.
Lourie carded a 1-over par 74 at the 6,008-yard Lakewood Country Club, which was good enough for a tie for the lead individually at the 15-team field. The Canadian overcame cold, gusty winds to tie Tulane's Alexis Wooster for top honors heading into Tuesday's final round. The senior was the only player in the field to shoot under-par on the back nine, getting around in just 34 swings.
The Blazer squad, meanwhile, stands tied for seventh after a team score of 330. Freshman Brooke Mangan continued her solid rookie season with a 6-over par 79, good enough for a tie for eighth individually. Christina Gushanas is tied for 47th after a first-round 86, while Jenni Elmore and Katie Kane rounded out the day with a 91 and 92, respectively.
Only 15 players managed to break 80 in the rough conditions. Tourney-host Tulane put three players in the top-10 individually to vault the Green Wave to a 10-shot advantage over second-place Campbell. Mississippi State (319), Memphis (321) and Central Florida (323) rounded out the top-five.
UAB is tied with nationally-ranked Mississippi (43rd in the latest GolfStat.com rankings) and Louisville (330).
Final-round action will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
