Blazers Fall To Southern Miss 3-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Southern Miss (19-3, 4-0 Conference USA) extended its winning streak to four matches and remained unbeaten in league play after defeating UAB 3-2 in Conference USA volleyball action Saturday evening at Bartow Arena.
Southern Miss appeared to be running away with the match early, winning the first two games 30-16 and 30-18 respectively. However, UAB came back after the intermission and took game three 30-28 and followed with another victory in game four 30-23. After a back-and-forth battle in game five, Southern Miss prevailed 15-12.
Senior middle blocker Karen Boyd recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 19 kills and 15 digs to go along with four total blocks, 22 points and a .375 hitting percentage to lead UAB. Senior outside hitter Martina Shields, sophomore outside hitter Breanne Swenson and freshman setter Jenna Link also posted double-doubles for the Blazers. Swenson recorded her team-leading ninth of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs to go along with 11.5 points, Shields posted her seventh with 18 kills and 19 digs and had a total of 18.5 points, and Link added her fifth of the season with 45 assists and 13 digs. In addition, sophomore outside/right side hitter Lindsay Carnohan had a career-high 20.5 points and 16 kills to go along with three service aces and three total blocks for UAB.
"It was a very disappointing loss for obvious reasons," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "However, I was very proud of how our team fought back after being down 2-0. We learned an important lesson tonight in how we need to compete as a team, one that I am sure will come in handy in a future test."
Senior middle blocker/right side hitter Bridget Files led the match with 22.5 points and recorded a double-double for the Golden Eagles with 19 kills and 15 digs to go along with three total blocks, two service aces and a .372 hitting percentage. Junior setter Amy Truong added 58 assists for Southern Miss.
UAB (9-11, 2-2 C-USA) returns to action Tuesday as the team travels to Oxford, Miss. to take on Southeastern Conference foe Ole Miss at 7 p.m.
