BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Tulane (16-2, 3-0 Conference USA) extended its winning streak to nine matches and remained unbeaten in league play as the Green Wave defeated UAB 30-26, 30-26, 30-22 in Conference USA volleyball action Friday evening at Bartow Arena.
Senior outside hitter Martina Shields had 14.5 points on 13 kills and three total blocks to lead the Blazers, who saw their four-match winning streak snapped. Senior middle blocker Karen Boyd posted 14 points on 10 kills and seven total blocks and freshman setter Jenna Link added 31 assists for UAB.
"I thought we were in the match the whole entire time," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "They would just pull away at the very end and we didn't fight to respond to that. I thought our right-side attack really came through and did a good job keeping their defense off-balance, which we need because everyone comes gunning for Martina [Shields]. We need to be able to balance that out and I think we did a good job of that tonight. We're not the type of team where one or two people are going to carry us. We need everybody clicking and doing their part so that no one person has to carry too big of a load."
Junior middle blocker Deva Fowler led Tulane with 13 points on 10 kills and four total blocks. Sophomore setters Kelli Dickson and Katie Case added 20 assists and 18 assists respectively for the Green Wave.
UAB (9-10, 2-1 C-USA) returns to Bartow Arena Saturday to take on C-USA rival Southern Miss (18-3, 3-0 C-USA) at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for children ages 3-12, children 2 and under are admitted free and UAB students are admitted free with a valid student ID.
