GREENVILLE, N.C. - UAB (8-9, 1-0 Conference USA) defeated East Carolina 17-30, 30-26, 29-31, 30-23, 15-11 in Conference USA volleyball action Friday evening at Williams Arena.
In the C-USA opener for both teams, sophomore outside hitter Breanne Swenson led the match, recording a double-double for UAB with 19 kills, 13 digs, four service aces, four total blocks and 25.5 points. Senior outside hitter Martina Shields also posted a double-double for the Blazers with 17 kills, 13 digs, two service aces, three total blocks and 20.5 points, while hitting for .351. Senior middle blocker Karen Boyd added 14.5 points on 12 kills, five total blocks and hit for .370, while sophomore outside/right side hitter Lindsay Carnohan had 10 points on five kills, three service aces and three total blocks for UAB. Freshman setter Jenna Link posted 51 assists while hitting for .429 and recording seven digs for the Blazers.
"We had a lot of players come through for us tonight," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "We really came together as a team and played emotionally and played smart volleyball."
Freshman middle blocker Jaime Bevan had 19 points on 16 kills and three total blocks to lead East Carolina (8-10, 0-1 C-USA). Junior setter Jessica Vick added 51 assists for the Pirates.
UAB next plays at C-USA rival Charlotte Saturday at 7 p.m. (ET).
