CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UAB (9-9, 2-0 Conference USA) extended its winning streak to four matches and remained unbeaten in Conference USA play, defeating Charlotte 30-22, 23-30, 30-23, 30-21 in volleyball action Saturday evening at Halton Arena.
Senior outside hitter Martina Shields and sophomore outside hitter Breanne Swenson recorded their second double-doubles of the weekend for the Blazers. Shields led UAB with 18.5 points on 17 kills while hitting for .361 and posting 18 digs. Swenson, who recorded her team-leading eighth double-double of the season, had 15.5 points on 14 kills to go along with 14 digs. Sophomore outside/right side hitter Lindsay Carnohan added 13 points on 12 kills and two total blocks and senior middle blocker Karen Boyd also posted 13 points on nine kills and three total blocks for UAB. Freshman setter Jenna Link recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 49 assists and 12 digs for the Blazers.
"We had a really great team performance tonight," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "I thought we really dug down and played some good team volleyball. It was good to get two conference wins on the road, especially in the first weekend of conference play."
Freshman middle blocker Lynae Mulder led Charlotte (6-13, 0-2 C-USA) with 11.5 points on 10 kills. Junior setter Molly McDonald added 33 assists for the 49ers.
UAB returns home to Bartow Arena Friday to host C-USA rival Tulane at 7 p.m.
