BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team worked out for just over two hours Thursday in helmets and shorts in the team's final practice before taking on Conference USA rival Tulane (3-6, 1-5 C-USA) Saturday afternoon at Legion Field. The practice consisted mostly of mental preparation and closed with the offense working on a two-minute drill.
Although, Tulane has lost its last five games, UAB head coach Watson Brown feels the Green Wave has a powerful offense and Saturday's game will produce a great challenge.
"I'm concerned because Tulane matches up with us well," said Brown. "They are very good on offense. They spread you out and we've had some trouble recently with the ball-control pass. We've played the run much better, but they have great speed on offense. Our offense needs to keep the ball. Our defense is going to have their hands full. I think we're going to have to play better than we did last week. They are the most dangerous team on the schedule, I think, with their receivers, running back and quarterback."
Brown also feels that red-shirt freshman Chris Williams, who has now started two games this season in place of the injured Darrell Hackney, will continue to improve as he sees more game action.
"I thought he (Williams) played very well against Georgia," said Brown. "He didn't play as well against Army, but he did make some big plays. I think he'll play better against Tulane. Every time he goes out there, he'll be a little better. He's from New Orleans, so I think he'll be excited to play Tulane. It's sort of an 'old home' week for him. We're going to have to be a little looser with him this week because 13 points is not going to win this game. We're going to have to score points. Chris has to play better and our offense has to help him.
Kickoff between UAB (4-5, 3-2 C-USA) and Tulane is scheduled for 3 p.m. The game will be televised by Charter/Comcast Sports Southeast and can also be heard locally on WYDE-FM 101.1.
