Blazers Fall To Marshall, 68-66

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sophomore center Mark Patton hit two free throws with 0.40 seconds left to raise Marshall over UAB in a 68-66 victory on Tuesday night.
"They (Marshall) came in and made plays down the stretch," UAB head coach Mike Anderson said. "We didn't shoot the ball well and it seemed like we were a half a step behind all night. I thought we played hard and fought hard, but you have to shoot the ball well and we didn't do that tonight. This is a disheartening loss."
Marshall's last possession started with 15.4 seconds left.
The Thundering Herd (4-4) called time-out with 2.3 seconds remaining, when guard Luther Whitted was trapped near the top of the key.
On the inbounds play, Patton caught a pass left of the lane and drove to the basked to draw a foul from UAB Demario Eddins.
At first it appeared that Patton had been fouled as time ran out, meaning his free throws would come with no time left on the clock.
But the officials huddled and put 0.40 second on the clock.
After a UAB time-out, Patton calmly sank both free throws. A long UAB pass was knocked away at the buzzer.
Marvin Black scored 13 points to lead Marshall, while Patton and Ronny Dawn scored 10 points each.
Gabe Kennedy scored 20 points to lead UAB (6-4), while Richard Jones added 10 points.
UAB led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but a late 8-0 run by Marshall closed the margin to 36-31 at halftime.
Marshall outrebounded the Blazers 42-31 and hit 48 percent of its shots, holding UAB to 38 percent shooting.
UAB will remain at home for its next contest when the Blazers battle instate foe South Alabama on Saturday, Jan. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Bartow Arena. The first 5,000 fans in the doors will receive commerative 25th anniversary lapel pins.
