BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Senior guard Morris Finley was named the Conference USA Player of the Week for his performances against Birmingham-Southern and Mississippi State, announced C-USA officials on Monday. Last week, the LaFayette, Ala. native averaged 25.0 points and 24.0 minutes per game, while shooting 68 percent from the floor.
Finley helped UAB to a 1-1 record during the week, defeating Birmingham-Southern, 90-67, on Dec. 3, while falling to Mississippi State, 86-84, on the road. Against the Panthers, the senior guard had 12 points and three assists to help the Blazers improve to 3-0 at home. Last Saturday in Starkville, Miss., Finley exploded for a career-high 38 points, the most by a UAB player on an opponent's home court, breaking the old mark set by Carlos Williams who posted 36 at Auburn on Dec. 3, 1995. He also set career-bests for field goals made (15) and attempted (21). Finley leads UAB and is third in Conference USA in scoring, averaging 18.0 points per game.
Finley earns the C-USA Player of the Week Award for the second time in his career. Last season, he shared the award with Chris Massie (Memphis) for the week of December 30th.
Finley and the 3-1 Blazers will next be in action on Monday, Dec. 15, when they travel to Mobile, Ala.. to take on Western Michigan in the Coors Classic.
