BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team travels to the lone-star state this weekend for conference showdowns with Houston and TCU. The Blazers (1-18, 0-7 C-USA) return to the court after a week off in search of their first conference victory of the season. UAB also looks to put an end to its nine-match losing streak Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. against Houston (5-16, 3-5 C-USA). The Blazers will then take on the TCU Horned Frogs (15-8, 5-3 C-USA) Saturday at 7 p.m. in Fort Worth.
In their only match last week, the Blazers suffered a 3-0 defeat to USF in Tampa, Fla. Isabel Oquendo led UAB with 13 kills and freshman Nicole Bowland added eight of her own. Meredith Walker, playing the libero position, contributed with a season-high ten digs.
The Blazers 3-1 victory over Houston last season in Birmingham was UAB's first ever against the Cougars. Houston is coming off a victory over Northwestern State on Tuesday evening, led by Loure Dews' 23 kills.
TCU holds a 4-1 all-time series lead over UAB, after narrowly escaping with a 3-2 win over the Blazers last year in Birmingham. The Horned Frogs swept North Texas, 3-0 on Tuesday evening, behind a 15-kill, 10-dig performance from Ellen Rehme and .320 team hitting percentage.
The Blazers will return home next weekend for their final two home matches of the 2004 season against Memphis and Saint Louis.
