FORT WORTH, Texas - The UAB volleyball team was defeated 3-0 Saturday evening by TCU in the Horned Frogs' University Rec Center. The Blazers are now 1-20 overall and 0-9 in C-USA while the Frogs improve to 17-8 and 7-3 in conference play. Brianna Galvin played an outstanding defensive match for UAB, recording 16 digs which led all players. Isabel Oquendo led the way offensively with nine kills. Angie Ping also stepped in for the Blazers and contributed with four kills on only nine attempts. As a team, the Blazers came up with more digs and more total blocks than TCU.
"Our goal coming into tonight was to outdig them and outblock them and we accomplished that," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "We got some better offensive performances from different players including (Angie) Ping who stepped in and did a great job. We just need to take these positives and continue to build on them."
TCU jumped out to an early lead thanks to a 30-20 win in game number one. The Horned Frogs hit .351 compared to UAB's .067 en route to the opening game victory. After a 30-19 TCU win in game two, the Blazers came back with their best performance of the evening in the third game. UAB led at two different points, but could not overcome TCU's .387 hitting percentage as the Frogs finished off the match by a score of 30-23 on a service ace by Anna Vaughn.
Four different TCU players recorded double-digit kill performances, including Dominika Szabo who led all players with 14. Frogs' setter Erin Ludeke contributed with 41 assists in the match.
UAB will close out its home schedule next weekend with matches against Memphis and Saint Louis in Bartow Arena. The Blazers will take on the Tigers Friday evening and host the Billikens on Saturday. Both matches get underway at 7:00 p.m. (CT).
