Volleyball Blanked at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The UAB volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Tulane Friday evening at Fogelman Arena. The Blazers fall to 0-12 in C-USA play and 1-23 overall while the Green Wave improves to 15-9, 5-7 in league competition. The Blazers were led by Nicole Bowland's 12 kills and Isabel Oquendo's 10 digs.
"I thought we got some good offensive performances from many players tonight, including Nicole Bowland and Meredith Jones," said UAB head coach Melinda Claiborne. "We keep getting better and have a good attitude. If we play this well tomorrow, I feel like we've got a good chance to pick up our first conference victory."
Tulane jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a 30-21 victory in game number one. The Green Wave hit .325 as a team compared to UAB's .143, grabbing an early advantage in the match. The Blazers put together a strong run in game two, but fell short, 30-25. Looking to prolong the evening, UAB hit .310 as a team in game three, putting away 17 kills while making just four attack errors. But Tulane proved too strong again, hitting a match-best .463 and taking game the game by a score of 30-20.
Three Tulane players recorded double-doubles in the match. Anastasia Kenon led all players with 21 kills and added ten digs while Brittany Esser also had ten digs to go along with a match-best 47 assists. Sarah Weiland hit .464 for the Green Wave, recording 15 kills and 14 digs.
The Blazers travel to Southern Miss Saturday at 7 p.m. where they will face the Golden Eagles in their final match of the 2004 season.
