BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Marvett McDonald and Donell Taylor scored 13 points a piece and four others reached double figures, leading UAB to a 100-68 rout of Alabama A&M on Tuesday night.
Marques Lewis and Richard Jones scored 12 points each and Brandon Tobias and Ronell Taylor had 10 for UAB (8-3). Tobias's total matched his career high.
"I couldn't ask them to play any better than they did tonight," UAB head coach Mike Anderson said. "They came out at the start of the game and took some shots. They were sharing the basketball, but it started from the defensive side of the ball. They did a good job covering the other team, getting the ball back and trying to get in position to make good shots. We shot the ball well tonight."
Marcus Young scored a game-high 15 points to lead Alabama A&M (3-7). Young scored the final 9 points of the game for the Bulldogs. Obie Trotter added 13 points and Joe Martin had 12 for Alabama A&M.
UAB jumped to an 8-0 lead and was never threatened. The Blazers are known for their pressure defense, but showed off their passing skills against Bulldogs. UAB had 20 assists on its way to building a 64-36 halftime lead.
Alabama A&M contained UAB in the second half, holding the Blazers to 36 points. But the Bulldogs could get no closer than 22 points.
The Blazers finished with a 52.1-percent clip from the field (37-of-71) and had 25 assists on the night. UAB also hit 10-of-23 from long range and out-rebounded A&M, 44-42.All 13 roster members saw action for Mike Anderson's squad. Freshman Paul Delaney bettered his previous career high with seven points behind five-of-eight shooting from the free throw line. Ernest Little had eight points and five rebounds to go with two blocked shots. Derrick Broom scored six and was the team's leading rebounder with six caroms.
UAB next has a New Year's Eve date with in-state rival South Alabama. The Blazers visit the Mitchell Center in Mobile in a 5 p.m. CT contest Friday evening. They close out non-conference play at home on Sunday at 3 p.m. against Murray State.
