BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Defending champion LSU leads a strong contingent of teams returning for the second annual Shoal Creek Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 25-26, hosted by UAB. LSU will have its work cut out as this year's field features 12 of the 15 teams that were ranked among the top 60 of Golfweek's 2006 final spring rankings.
"Last year was a great event and we think this year's will be even better," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "We feel we have compiled one of the most competitive and top-level fields of any tournament around. It was important for us at UAB to make this year's Shoal Creek event even more memorable than last year's. That way, our goal is to become one of the best annual fall tournaments in the nation."
Prior to last year's event, Shoal Creek had been without a major collegiate tournament for nine years. One of the finest jewels of the South, Shoal Creek has played host to the 1984 and 1990 PGA Championship and 1986 U.S. Amateur, and will also be the site of to the 2008 U.S. Junior Amatuer.
Last year's event lived up to expectations of the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate being one of the most competitive and exciting tournaments around.
First round leader LSU came back after falling behind SEC rival Tennessee after the second round to nip the Volunteers by a single stroke to win the 2005 title. The Tigers' team score of 863 was one-under for the 54-hole tournament on the par-72, 7,114-yard Shoal Creek Country Club course. The host Blazers, who vaulted from an eighth-place tie after one round to fourth after two, finished third in the team standings.
Individually, East Tennessee State's Rhys Davies and Tennessee's Jonathan Mount were declared co-champions after playing even on a four-hole playoff. Notre Dame's Cole Isban (69-69-72) was knocked out on the first playoff hole. Davies scores were 72-70-68 and Mount carded rounds of 70-69-71. The trio finished the 54-hole tournament at six-under par, 210.
The event commences Monday, Sept. 25, with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. CT. Following Monday's two rounds, the final 18 holes will begin on Tuesday at 8:15 a.m., with set tee times beginning on holes No. 1 and No. 10.
