BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team practiced for a little over two hours on Wednesday afternoon, continuing a trend this week of more physical, demanding style of practice. UAB head coach Neil Callaway continues to like what he sees, but felt the 17-period session in pads and shorts was not as impressive as Tuesday's workout.
"It was a pretty good day, but not as good as yesterday," UAB head coach Neil Callaway said. "We did do some good things, but we are not as sharp as what we need to be. We still have two days to get the assignments down and make sure we are doing things right."
The team went through the normal Wednesday preparation of fine-tuning the game plan and working on team situations that may come up during a game. Callaway also had his team go through a series of one-minute drills at the end of the day, including kicking a field goal as the clock was winding down the final 10 seconds.
Despite giving up 90 points in the last two games, the UAB defense has played impressively throughout this week. Callaway knows his defense has got to step up in order to have a chance to earn the program's first-ever win over Southern Miss.
"Our defense had a good practice today, but they haven't been perfect by any means," Callaway said. "Our effort has been a lot better and the tempo in practice has been a lot better. The last couple of weeks, we had backed off of them trying not to get anybody hurt and that was on me, but now we decided to go back and get after it."
The Blazers and Golden Eagles will kick off at 6:00 p.m. at Legion Field on Saturday.
The game will be televised regionally by CSS. Radio coverage of the game can be heard on the Blazers' ISP Sports Network flagship station WUHT 107.7 FM. The broadcast can also be heard on affiliates WIQR 1410 AM in Montgomery, WTRB 98.3 FM in Talladega and WACT 1420 AM in Tuscaloosa.
