UAB Takes Down Marshall, 62-55

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - In a battle of two first-place teams in Conference USA, the UAB women's basketball team outdid the Thundering Herd of Marshall, 62-55, Saturday afternoon to remain atop the conference standings. The Blazers now boast an overall record of 13-9, including an 8-2 mark in C-USA play. Marshall fell to 14-9 overall and 7-3 in the league.
"This was a huge win for us," said UAB head coach Audra Smith. "To come on the road and go 2-0 against East Carolina and Marshall is big."
Junior Diamond Rogers tallied 11 points and nine rebounds in the first half to give UAB the 27-24 edge at halftime. Senior Modupe Ishola hit 3-of-4 from the floor to lead the Thundering Herd at the half with nine points.
UAB extended its lead to as much as 12 points, 46-34, with 12:59 remaining in the game courtesy of a three-pointer by sophomore Britney Jones. Marshall slowly chipped away at the Blazers' lead, narrowing the difference to three points, 59-55, in favor of UAB with 25 seconds left in the game.
A pair of free throws by Jones at the 22 second mark, followed by two free throws by freshman Fatiha Salaam with six seconds left on the clock, secured the Blazers' victory, 62-55.
Senior Carmen Guzman led UAB with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while also adding five rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Rogers nabbed her third consecutive double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds against the Thundering Herd. Jones was the third Blazer to hit double figures, scoring 11 points and grabbing four rebounds on the day.
Meg Withrow led Marshall in scoring with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting, while Ishola finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine boards.
UAB held the slight advantage in shooting, hitting 36.2 percent of its shots, compared to 35.5 percent for Marshall. The Blazers also nailed 40 percent of their three-point attempts (10-of-25) and 83.3 percent of their free throws.
The Blazers' next contest is on Wednesday, February 7, when UTEP visits Bartow Arena for a Conference USA showdown.
