BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB football team held its final practice of the week Thursday afternoon at Legion Field as the Blazers prepare for a clash with Tulane on the road Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
Moving practice to Legion Field helped UAB in two ways. First, it allowed the team to practice on FieldTurf and avoid wet practice field conditions caused by the rain. Second, it helped the Blazers prepare for playing Tulane at the Louisiana Superdome, which also has a FieldTurf playing surface.
"We wanted to take the opportunity to get out and play on the turf," UAB head coach Neil Callaway said. "The rain had made our practice field a little sloppy, plus I think it's always good to practice on what you're going to play on."
UAB continued to fine tune its game plan for Saturday's contest, preparing to face a Tulane team that is in a similar situation. Both teams enter the game at 2-7 overall and 1-4 in Conference USA.
"I thought practice today went a lot better than yesterday," Callaway said. "We were only in helmets, so we weren't really physical, but I thought the tempo throughout our practice was good."
UAB is 3-3 in six all-time meetings with Tulane. The last time the teams met in New Orleans was in 2004 when the Green Wave came away with a 59-55 victory in the second-highest scoring game in Conference USA history. The Blazers returned the favor last season with a 26-21 win in Birmingham.
Saturday's game will be carried on the Blazers ISP Sports Network. It can be heard locally on WWMM 100.5 FM radio in Birmingham.
