BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Samantha Serley, a senior at Independence High School in Franklin, Tenn., has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the UAB volleyball program. Serley signed during last week's early signing period and will suit up for the Blazers in 2009.
Serley comes to UAB as a highly decorated player at both the high school and club levels of volleyball.
"We like her size a lot," UAB head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "We lose a great deal of size this year in our senior class, so it was a top priority to to sign some players with size. We fully expect her to step in and contribute right away."
Serley has been a part of two national championships with the Impact Volleyball Club out of Nashville, Tenn. She earned tournament MVP honors in 2006 as she guided Impact to the 15-Under National Championship, and she also helped her 2008 team to the 17-Under National Title.
With her club team, Serley has also won two Southern Region Volleyball Association Championships and a Big South Qualifier title. Additionally, her team finished third in the 17-Under Open Mideast Qualifier in 2008.
"Samantha has not only played on a good high school team but also a great club team," Messersmith said. "She has experience with winning, and it was also a priority for us to recruit a winner."
As a high school player, Serley has been a four-year starter for Independence. She earned all-state honors in 2008 as she led her team to the Tennessee AAA State Championship. Along the way, she was named MVP of the Region 5 Tournament.
Serley has been honored three times with all-district awards and twice on the all-district tournament team. She was named to the PrepVolleyball.com Sophomore 79 list in 2006 and to the Tennessee Sportswriters Association All-State team in 2007. As a senior in 2008, she was selected a Senior Ace by PrepVolleyball.com.
