BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB senior volleyball player Casey Dent has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The honor marks the third straight year Dent has earned Academic All-District recognition, having been named to the third team in both 2006 and 2007. She is now eligible for Academic All-America voting, which will be conducted by CoSIDA later this month.
"Casey is well deserving of this honor," UAB head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "She has been an exceptional player for us, and academics have always been very important to her. We are proud of the example she sets both on the volleyball court and in the classroom."
A middle blocker from Helena, Ala., Dent is a finance major with a 3.74 cumulative GPA. In addition to her Academic All-Region honors, she has been recognized the past two seasons with the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal and a spot on the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
On the court, Dent has helped UAB to a 22-3 record and first place in the C-USA standings with a 12-1 league mark. The middle blocker ranks third in the conference and 20th in the nation with a .395 hitting percentage. So far in 2008, she has posted 271 kills with just 50 errors in 560 attempts.
Dent's career hitting percentage of .336 places her second all-time at UAB. A four-year starter, she has also accumulated 1,208 career kills to rank ninth in Blazer annals.
Dent has started every match and played in every set for UAB in 2008. She has helped the Blazers to a current 16-match winning streak, the longest in school history.
