Blazers Gain 65-53 Win Over Alabama A&M

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior guard Britney Jones scored a game-high 27 points for the UAB women's basketball team as it topped Alabama A&M, 65-53, Monday evening at Bartow Arena. Sophomore guard Amanda Peterson added 14 points and eight rebounds in the Blazer win.
UAB moves to 5-7 on the year, including a 4-3 mark at home. Alabama A&M falls to 2-8 overall this season.
After going shot-for-shot throughout most of the first half, UAB went into halftime with a three-point lead, 30-27, after Jones nailed a three-point bucket at the buzzer.
The Blazers extended their lead to as much as 18, 59-41, with 8:06 remaining in the game on a pair of free throws by junior forward Erica Simpson. Alabama A&M went on a 10-2 run to cut UAB's lead to 10, 61-51, with 1:26 left on the clock. The Blazers held on for a 12-point victory over the Bulldogs, 65-53.
"We really needed this win tonight," said UAB head coach Audra Smith. "We are getting ready to go on the road for two games and this will help our confidence and hopefully give us some momentum.
"We didn't shoot very well in the first half, but the three by Britney Jones right before halftime was huge for us. We came out and got a nice lead in the second half. Then we started to make mistakes and let them get back in the game. We held on for the win, but we just can't give up leads like that."
UAB shot just 33.3 percent from the field in the first half, but improved its shooting to 45.5 percent in the second half. The Blazers sank 6-of-18 from three-point range (33.3 percent) and 21-of-25 (84.0 percent) from the charity stripe.
Jones' 27 points was her second-best performance of the season, having previously scored 28 points versus Florida on Dec. 3. She went 8-of-14 from the floor tonight, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Jones was also a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
Peterson's 14 points came on 4-of-12 shooting, including a pair of treys and four buckets from the free throw line. She also grabbed a game-high eight boards and chipped in two assists on the night.
Alabama A&M hit 37.0 percent of its shots overall. The Bulldogs sank 46.2 percent in the first half, but cooled off to 28.6 percent in the second half. Alabama A&M was just 2-of-15 (13.3 percent) from beyond the arc and went 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) from the charity stripe.
Katrich Williams led Alabama A&M with 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting and 4-of-7 on free throws. Williams, along with teammate Erica Thompson, also tallied a game-high four assists each.
Chaymieyon Moss recorded 10 points for the Bulldogs, going 4-of-8 from the field, along with five boards and two blocks.
UAB will be back in action on Friday when it travels to Starkville, Miss. to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs at 7 p.m. CT.
