BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team fell to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 1-0, in overtime Sunday afternoon at West Campus Field.
The Blazers move to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA. Southern Miss improves its record to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
"You always have that chance that after an emotional, big game on a Friday night where you get a great win, there's a possibility of a drop the next match," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "I don't know if that is what happened, but we did not come out and play with the same passion and discipline that we displayed on Friday night.
"We led in shots and possession, but what we didn't do was find a way to win the game today. We didn't have that extra enthusiasm, energy and dynamic play that puts a game away."
After battling to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation, the two teams took the game into overtime. The lone goal of the game came in the 96th minute when Southern Miss' Sarah DeFatta put a corner kick in the perfect place for Samantha Polley to knock in the goal and give the Golden Eagles the 1-0 C-USA victory.
"Our energy wasn't as good today as it was on Friday," said sophomore Marie Yempuku. "We have to find a way to get ourselves going for every game. We have to take things one game at a time and just worry about what we are going to do for the 90 minutes that we are on the field for this game."
UAB dominated in shots, 18-8, over Southern Miss. The Blazers outshot the Golden Eagles 11-3 in the first half and 5-3 in the second half. The two teams took two shots each in the overtime period.
Freshman Laura McCalla paced UAB in shots with four, including two shots on goal. Senior Caitlin Marple and freshman Carolyn Polcari added three shots apiece.
Southern Miss was led in shots by Sarah McFadden with six on the day. Polley and Renee Hrapmann had one shot each as well.
Sophomore Kate Blankenship (3-5) received the loss in goal for the Blazers, recording two saves and allowing one goal. Goalkeeper Holly Cox (5-4-1) earned the win for the Golden Eagles, tallying six saves and preserving the shutout for Southern Miss.
The Blazers will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take on the Colorado College Tigers at 4 p.m. MT.
"Colorado College is another really good team that we have to play," said Harbin. "The key is not to so much focus on the opposing team, but to pay attention to ourselves and make sure that we are doing the things that we need to do to play on the level that we are capable of playing at, and we need to do them on a consistent basis."
