HOUSTON - Aubrey Coleman scored 25 points, all coming in the second half, to lead Houston to a 75-56 win over UAB on Saturday night. The Blazers finished the game shooting 40.4 percent, including hitting only 1-of-16 three-point attempts.
"I am very disappointed in our effort and the way we came out to play tonight," UAB head coach Mike Davis said. "We worked hard in practice all week and to come out and play the way we did tonight is unacceptable."
Coleman, who was 0-of-2 shooting from the floor in the first half, finished 11-of-20 from the field for the Cougars (10-3, 1-0 C-USA), who controlled the boards 41-27 and shot 49 percent from the floor.
Kelvin Lewis added 19 points for Houston, and Marcus Cousin had 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Lawrence Kinnard led UAB (9-6, 0-1) with 10 points and 12 rebounds to record his conference-leading sixth double-double of the season. Howard Crawford came off the bench for a team-high 13 points on the night.
Robert Vaden, who entered the game third in the league in scoring (19.6 ppg) and leading C-USA in three-pointers made per game (3.71), finished with just 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting from the floor and 1-of-8 from deep.
The Blazers trailed 35-25 at the half but came out and played well to start the second half. UAB opened the half by outscoring Houston 16-12 to cut the deficit to 47-41 with just over 11 minutes remaining. However, the Cougars caught fire and outscored UAB 21-3 over the next six minutes to blow open the game.
UAB will try to bounce back when it takes on UCF on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. at Bartow Arena. The contest will be televised live on CSS and will also air on the Blazers ISP Radio Network, WUHT 107.7 FM.
