BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB football team continued to practice in sunshine at the UAB practice facility, as the Blazers went for approximately two hours in helmets and shoulder pads on Wednesday morning. For the team and Blazers' head coach Neil Callaway, the improved weather has helped in this week's preparation.
"I thought it was a pretty good practice," Callaway said. "We still have some things to work out on Florida Atlantic, but we were able to get some things done today.
"The weather is a lot different than what it has been and what we're used to," Callaway said. "This is the best weather we've had since I can't even remember. Probably early this fall. We had some good days early in fall practice, but it's been a long time."
It's a good thing the Blazers are taking advantage of the sunshine. Florida Atlantic comes into Saturday's contest with the ninth-best total offense in the nation according to the latest statistics released by the NCAA. The Owls are 11th in the nation in passing (301.7 yards per game) and 53rd in rushing (150.9 yards per game). FAU also leads the Sun Belt Conference in pass defense, allowing opponents to throw for an average of just 205 yards per game.
"Florida Atlantic is a very balanced football team," Callaway said. "We all know about their offense and they do a good job. Defensively, they don't do a lot of different things. They play hard and they have a lot of team speed period."
Saturday's game will be carried on the Blazers ISP Sports Network and can be heard in the Birmingham area on flagship station WUHT-FM 107.7 with David Crane (play-by-play) and Jake Arians (color) on the call. The pregame show will begin 90 minutes prior to kickoff.
