George Drake Named UAB Student-Athlete Of The Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- George Drake, a senior member of the Blazer men's basketball team, has been selected as the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week.
Drake, in his first year with the UAB program, is working on a master's degree in health education. The Calera, Ala., product came to the Blazers from Vanderbilt, where he played for three seasons while earning his undergraduate degree in sociology with a minor in political science.
On the court, Drake is averaging 6.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game this season. A guard, Drake has played in all seven games, averaging 25 minutes. He earned the starting nod Nov. 17 at Jacksonville State when he turned in a season-best 10 points and added six rebounds.
The UAB Student-Athlete of the Week is highlighted each Sunday night on Blazers All-Access, which airs locally at 11:35 p.m. on ABC 33/40.
Drake and the men's basketball team are back in action with two contests this week as they continue a six-game homestand.
The Blazers host Middle Tennessee on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT, and then East Tennessee State, led by former UAB coach Murry Bartow, visits Bartow Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. CT for the UAB Health System Gene Bartow Classic. The game will honor Murry's father, legendary former Blazer coach and Hall of Famer Gene Bartow.
Throughout the contest against East Tennessee State, Gene Bartow will be honored for his decades of commitment to intercollegiate sports, especially during his tenure at UAB. A portion of the ticket proceeds will be donated to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center on behalf of Bartow, who is undergoing treatment at UAB for stomach cancer.
