BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Junior guard Jamarr Sanders was named the Conference USA Rookie Of The Week, announced league officials on Monday. This is his first C-USA Rookie of the Week honor, while it's the Blazers' third weekly honor on the season (Elijah Millsap was named the Rookie of the Week on Nov. 16 and the Player of the Week on Dec. 21).
"Jamarr has been terrific for us and is very deserving of this honor," UAB head coach Mike Davis said. "He scored 18 points against a very good Buter team. Not only did he contribute offensively, but he also gave us energy throughout the entire game, especially on the defensive end of the floor. I am happy the media from around the league recognized his contributions."
Sanders had a big game in leading UAB to a 67-57 victory over then-No. 16/20 Butler on Dec. 22. He collected a game-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in the 10-point victory. Sanders also added six rebounds and a tied for a game-high in assists with five.
The 18 points were the second-best scoring output this season. He currently ranks third on the team in scoring this season (11.6 ppg) and ranks second in rebounds (4.9 rpg) and assists (3.0 apg).
Sanders and the Blazers will have a pair of tough road contests to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule this week. UAB will open the week with a contest at Virginia on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET), followed by playing at Arkansas on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.
