Blazers Have Six Named To All-Conference USA Football Teams

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB placed six players on the 2009 All-Conference USA football teams, voted on by the league's coaches and announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Senior center Jake Seitz was selected for first-team honors while senior quarterback Joe Webb and junior safety Hiram Atwater garnered second-team accolades.
The Blazers also had a trio of players tabbed to the C-USA All-Freshman Team. Offensive lineman Chris Hubbard, linebacker Daniel White and snapper Taylor Klein were all named to the team.
From nearby Vestavia Hills, Seitz was a preseason all-conference choice during the summer and also was listed on the Rimington Award Preseason Watch List. The Rimington Award goes to the nation's outstanding collegiate center. Seitz set a UAB record for overall and consecutive starting assignments with 48 as he started every game throughout his Blazer career.
Webb, a Birmingham native, capped off his senior season two Saturdays ago against UCF when he became the first player in NCAA history to pass for more than 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 in consecutive seasons. Webb is ranked in the top 12 nationally of three statistical categories: total offense (5th), rushing (10th) and passing efficiency (12th).
Webb finished his 2009 season with 2,299 passing yards and 1,427 yards on the ground, the latter the third-highest season total by a quarterback in NCAA history. For his career, Webb had 5,771 passing yards and 2,774 rushing yards for a total of 8,545 offensive yards. Webb also registered 37 passing touchdowns, 24 rushing TDs and four receiving scores.
Atwater, in his first season with the Blazers after transferring from Garden City (Kan.) CC, led UAB in tackles with 89 in 11 games. Atwater's 40-yard touchdown return on an interception vs. Southern Miss sealed the Blazers' first-ever win over the Golden Eagles.
Hubbard, from Columbus, Ga., contributed to a Blazer offensive line that helped UAB set a school record for rushing yards average per game (229.9 ypg) and post the second-highest total offense average in school history (425.9 ypg). Hubbard started the season's first game against Rice, a 44-24 Blazer victory.
White made an impact in his first season in the Green and Gold as he played in all 12 games and started seven. The native of Apopka, Fla. finished as the Blazers' No. 6-leading tackler with 43 stops. He had 5.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. White also contributed three QB hurries and one forced fumble.
Klein handled UAB's long snapping duties, as well as taking care of snapping of placekicks.
Tight end Jeffery Anderson, offensive tackle Matt McCants and defensive lineman Bryant Turner were all named honorable mention all-conference.
