UAB Heads To Conference USA Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB track and field team looks to best a 2008 fourth-place performance at the 2009 Conference USA Indoor Championships, Feb. 27-28, in Houston, Texas.
"We've been training and competing well lately," said UAB head track and field coach Ray Stanfield. "But C-USA is loaded when it comes to women's track and field. We've got to get off to a good start we and better be ready."
Senior Alina Varpiotaite will look to garner her third straight Indoor All-Conference USA honor as she is set to compete in the 800-meter run. Varpiotaite has finished second in the event at the indoor championships in 2007 and 2008.
Sophomores Erica Whitby and Samantha Hamilton are also expected to compete for top spots in their respected events.
Whitby took top honors in the high jump at the Tiger Twilight on Feb. 20 in Baton Rouge, La. Her height of 1.69 meters was a new personal best for the Smiths Station, Ala. native.
Hamilton also set a new personal record with her performance in the 60-meter hurdles. Her time of 8.78 in the finals at the Tiger Twilight smashed her previous best of 8.94. Hamilton finished seventh in the event.
