BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Three UAB track athletes will travel to South Bend, Ind. this weekend for the Alex Wilson Invitational as they attempt to qualify for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships. Freshmen Rhiannon Johns, Sandra Lundberg and sophomore Samantha Hamilton are scheduled to compete for the Blazers on Friday and Saturday in three different events at the meet hosted by the University of Notre Dame.
"All three of these young ladies did a great job throughout the indoor season and at the Conference USA Indoor Championships," said UAB head track and field coach Ray Stanfield. "This meet will give them a chance to run with great athletes in a great atmosphere and try to hit the NCAA qualifying marks."
Johns will compete in the 3,000-meter run. During the season she set the UAB freshman record in the event with a time of 9:52.96 at the Niswonger Invitational on Jan. 31. Johns finished ninth at the C-USA Indoor Championships last weekend in the event with a time of 10:00.96.
