UAB Sends Three Athletes To Mideast Regional

Hamilton will be competing in the triple jump for the second straight year. The sophomore recently qualified for the regional meet after leaping 12.54m at the 2009 Conference USA Outdoor Championships on May 17. Last year, Hamilton finished 20th at the Mideast Regionals with a jump of 12.04m.
Mehl qualified for the high jump after posting a season-best mark of 1.78m during the heptathlon at the Sea Ray Relays on April 8. At the 2009 C-USA Outdoor Championships, she claimed the bronze with a height of 1.75m in the event and cleared the same height again at the meet en route to a first-place finish in the heptathlon.
Varpiotaite will be attending her third-straight NCAA Outdoor Mideast Regional as she is set to compete in the 800-meter run. She qualified for the meet after finishing sixth at the Seas Ray Relays with a time of 2:09.08. At the 2007 NCAA Mideast Regional, Varpiotaite set the UAB school record in the 800-meter with a time of 2:08.90 and finished in 13th place . The following year at the 2008 regional meet, she broke the school record again with a time of 2:07.70 and a ninth-place finish.
Varpiotaite will be the first Blazer to compete as the 800-meter run gets underway on Friday afternoon. Mehl and Hamilton will participate in their respective events on Saturday.
