DALLAS, Texas -- The UAB women's soccer team fell behind early in the first half to the SMU Mustangs and was unable to overcome the deficit, as SMU earned a 3-1 win Friday night at Westcott Field. Junior forward Laura McCalla tallied her team-leading 11th goal of the season in the final minute of action as the Blazers fall to 6-7-2 overall and 2-3-2 in Conference USA.
"From what I saw in the first half, I obviously didn't do a very good job of preparing our team for this match," head coach Paul Harbin said. "I'll certainly be focused on that for the next match. We dominated the second half and were prepared to play, but the key is to make certain we come out at the beginning of the game and play the way we did in the second half for an entire 90 minutes."
The Mustangs (10-4-2, 5-2 C-USA) scored all three of their goals in the first half, with Kaitlyn Eidson tallying the first goal in the sixth minute of play. Kristin Medeiros added SMU's second goal in the 32nd minute and Ryanne Lewis made it 3-0 with two minutes to go before halftime.
The Blazers held the Mustangs to just two shots in the second half, while getting off six of their own, including three on frame.
UAB forced SMU goalkeeper Courtney Webb to make four saves in the contest, but the Blazers were unable to put one away until McCalla's tally in the 89th minute. McCalla buried her 11th goal of the season on an assist from junior forward Tiffini Turpin.
Blazer keeper Kate Blankenship made two saves and allowed two goals before yielding to Alexis Braziel, who came on for the final 52 minutes of action. Braziel made one stop and allowed one goal.
The Blazers wrap up the weekend at Tulsa on Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
