UAB Volleyball Falls Saturday In First Match At Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. -- The UAB volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-22) loss Saturday afternoon in the first contest of a two-match weekend at Tulsa.
Sam Serley led UAB (4-13, 1-4 C-USA) with seven kills, while Kate Morrell, Ally Slaughter and Jordan McDonald each finished with five. The first-place Golden Hurricane (15-2, 6-0 C-USA) hit .333 in the match, led by 22 kills from Tyler Henderson and 12 from Kellie Culbertson.
The teams will meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. CT for the second match of the Conference USA weekend at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
UAB libero Heather Thomas posted a match-high 14 digs on Saturday, but Tulsa out-dug the Blazers 49-29 as a team. On the offensive end, the Golden Hurricane finished with 48 kills to 27 for the Blazers.
The first and third sets were tight. The Blazers fought to within two points late in the opening frame at 22-20 before Tulsa rattled off three straight points, including two kills by Henderson, to close it out. In the third set, UAB was within two points on five occassions late, the last time at 24-22, but could never get any closer.
Tulsa setter Jordan Clampitt led all players with 40 assists. Becca Howard had 14 helpers for UAB, and Alison Woods added 11.
UAB held a 4-2 advantage in blocks with Michelle Uzoh in on all four.
