Serley Named To C-USA Volleyball All-Academic Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A health science major and UAB's team leader in blocks and attack percentage, middle blocker Sam Serley earned a spot on the 2010 Conference USA Volleyball All-Academic Team on Monday.
The 12-member team was selected by a vote of the league's sports information directors based on both athletic and academic credentials. Only student-athletes with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 were eligible.
Serley, a sophomore in UAB's rigorous pre-med emphasis, owns a 3.7 GPA. The Nashville, Tenn., product was recognized on the UAB Dean's List and the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll as a freshman in 2009. She is a member of UAB's Student-Athlete Advisory Council and has participated in the Blazer Buddies reading program at local elementary schools.
On the court, Serley has blossomed into one of the top middle blockers in the conference. She ranks fifth in the league in blocks at 1.05 per set and eighth in attack percentage at .324. Serley is also averaging 2.91 kills per set with double-digit kills in 16 matches.
Memphis, SMU, Southern Miss and UCF led the league with two selections each to the all-academic team, while UAB, Marshall, Rice and Tulane had one representative each.
The Blazers have now placed someone on the all-academic team for five straight seasons. Casey Dent was a three-time selection from 2006-08, and Andrea Lalic was named to the squad last year.
UAB (11-19, 8-10 C-USA) closes its season this week with a pair of matches against Memphis. The Blazers will host the Tigers on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT and travel to Memphis for a 7 p.m. CT first serve on Saturday.
