BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team continued its preparations for Saturday's game at Rice with a workout on the turf at Birmingham-Southern.
The Blazers spent approximately 90 minutes as they polished their game plan for the Conference USA contest against the Owls at Rice Stadium.
"We got off to a little bit of a slow start, but I thought we picked it up as the practice went along," head coach Neil Callaway said. "We did some 11-on-11 and got the juices flowing, so it ended up being a pretty good practice.
UAB will be looking to post its second straight league victory after last Saturday's 31-15 win over Memphis. The Blazers will be going against a Rice offense that exploded for 62 points in a 62-38 victory over East Carolina last weekend.
"They have caught fire offensively," Callaway said of the Owls. "They are doing a lot of things, such as running the football and mixing it up. Offensively, they have been so successful, and I think that has bled over into the rest of the team."
Callaway also announced that the team's permanent captains had been selected, as voted on by the players. Senior defensive end Bryant Turner is the permanent captain for the defense, senior wide receiver Mike Jones for the offense and linebacker Caleb Dyck for the Blazers' special teams.
The Blazers will have a light workout early Thursday morning and then be released until reconvening Friday morning for a short practice session.
Saturday's contest will kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT and be carried live from Houston on the Blazer Sports Network, airing locally on 107.7 WUHT-FM. David Crane, John Whitcomb and Otis Leverette will call the action with the pregame show beginning at 1 p.m. CT.
