Ovie Soko Named Conference USA Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB's Ovie Soko was tabbed the Conference USA Player of the Week, announced the league office on Monday. Soko, a sophomore forward, averaged 18.0 points and 8.0 rebounds a game in helping lead the Blazers to wins over South Alabama and at Arkansas in Little Rock, Ark. last week.
In the win over the Jaguars Tuesday night, Soko recorded career highs in points (19), rebounds (8) and blocked shots (5) to help lead UAB to a 24-point victory (82-58). The London, England native was equally good in helping the Blazers to a 70-65 overtime win against Razorbacks on Friday. In that contest, Soko recorded 17 points, tied his career-high with eight boards and set a career-best with 41 minutes played. He also recorded a career-best four dunks in the victory.
In the overtime period alone, Soko, who scored 13 of his 17 points after the intermission, made his only basket, went 3-for-3 from the line and recorded a team-best five points and three rebounds as the Blazers outscored the Razorbacks, 13-8.
As a result of his stellar play, the Blazers improved to 4-1 overall which marks the third-straight season they have opened by winning four of their first five contests.
This season, Soko ranks third on the team with 14.0 ppg, is second with 6.2 rpg and has a team-high eight blocks (1.6 bpg).
Soko and the Blazers are in Troy, Ala. where they will take on the Troy Trojans on Monday night at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on the Blazers Sports Network, WUHT 107.7 FM.
