BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Cameron Moore recorded career-highs with 28 points and 15 rebounds as UAB defeated Kent State 75-59 on Sunday night. The Blazers improve to 7-2 overall and have now won five of their last six contests.
"I am happy with this performance, but we still have a lot of areas where we need to make improvements," UAB head coach Mike Davis said. "We have to get better. We can't put a game together. We can really run the floor well, but we have to get better possession-by-possession. We just have to continue to focus on getting better every day."
The Blazers shot 50.9 percent from the field (27 of 53), made 17 of 19 from the free-throw line (89.5 percent) and led 38-25 at halftime. The Golden Flashes (7-2) managed just 9-of-28 shooting from the field in the first half.
However, Kent State went on an 11-2 run early the second half on a cut the lead to one, 45-44, on Rodriguez Sherman's jumper with 11:06 to go.
But the Blazers scored seven straight on a 3 by Aaron Johnson, followed by two free throws and a layup by Moore. That sparked and 19-5 run to put the game out of reach.
Johnson, the nation's assist leader, finished with a season-high 19 points and had eight assists, while Jamarr Sanders scored 14 points for UAB. Moore shot 12 of 18 for the game and was 4 of 5 from the free-throw line.
Sherman led three Kent State players in double figures with 15. Justin Greene added 14 points and Carlton Guyton chipped in 10.
The Blazers, who played four games in seven days, will now have a two-week break from action and will not play again until Dec. 19 when they host Alabama A&M at 7 p.m. at Bartow Arena.
