Sam Serley Picks Up AVCA All-Region Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB sophomore volleyball player Sam Serley continues to pile up awards for her impressive 2010 season.
Already an All-Conference USA performer, Serley added All-Midwest Region honors to her resume Tuesday, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
Serley, a Nashville, Tenn., product, is one of 10 Conference USA players on the 14-member all-region team. The middle blocker is now a candidate, along with selections from the other seven regions, for the All-American teams that will be announced later this month.
"Sam had a tremendous season and was really a leader for our team both offensively and with her blocking," UAB head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "We're excited for her and even more excited that we will have her for two more years."
Serley ranked fourth in C-USA this season with a 1.08 blocks-per-set average and helped the Blazers to the third-highest blocking average in the league as a team. She was just as effective offensively, leading UAB in kills and ranking ninth in C-USA with a .318 attack percentage.
Even better over the second half of the season, Serley averaged 1.33 blocks per frame and hit .329 in the final 17 matches. She was key in the Blazers' strong finish as they closed the year with wins in their last five outings and eight of their last 11.
Serley becomes the 10th UAB player ever to earn AVCA All-Region honors and the fifth in the past five years. Ivana Bozic and Fernanda Domingos were selected in 2006, while Bozic, Nevena Stefanov and Casey Dent received the recognition in 2008.
